200 RATING REPORT

What is the 200 Rating Report?

Nowadays there are many rankings and statistics available for coaches and fans: defensive saves, assists, penalty corners per game, top goalscorers, etc. But two of the most important are missing: Attacking Penalty Corner Conversion Ranking and Defensive Penalty Corner Save Ranking.

This is why we developed these reports that contains the full 82 Division I teams and the 36 Division II teams ranked for APC conversion and DPC saving rates. At the same time, there are also rankings by conference, so all coaches can check where they are sitting compared to their direct opponents. In this report, one can also find the evolution from each team compared to their performances during the 2023 season. This information will allow coaches to see if the steps taken during the 2024 season on set pieces were positive or negative and to potentially change their approach to penalty corners. This and a lot more can be found on the full 56 and 23 pages long 200 Rating Reports created and developed by Penalty Corner Analytics.

But what is the 200 Rating? This rating intends to calculate and rank each team’s overall effectiveness on penalty corner set pieces. Therefore, this score is the result of a combination of success on both, attacking and defensive penalty corners. To calculate it, each team’s success percentage on APC has been added to their success on DPC; so for example, a team with an APC goal percentage of 21.82 and a DPC save percentage of 84.09 would have a 200 rating of 105.91 (21.82+84.09). The score on this rating can go from 0 (your team did not score any goal from corners and conceded a goal in every corner they defended) to 200 (your team scored all corners they had and did not concede a single goal from corners). The average for this rating is 100. Teams with a score over 100 have had an APC and DPC unit more effective than the teams they faced.

Why is the 200 Rating Report important?

Besides being able to rank all teams on set pieces, we believe this report is important because penalty corner conversion is not a science, and therefore there is not a unique global agreement on what is a good APC conversion rate and a good DPC save rate. What might be good for a coach, might be terrible for another one; potentially the expectation on APC conversion for the German National Team coach will be different than for any USA high school coach. During many games this season, media people kept using the 1/3 rule as a reference: a good or normal average for penalty corner conversion on college field hockey is scoring 1 goal for every 3 penalty corners. Is this realistic? 100% NO. Not even at the international level this is a common percentage. In fact, cut that in half and you will be closer to the Division I average.

So, this report seeks to show what is a good, an average and a bad corner conversion at the Division I and Division II levels, with the intention of setting realistic goals for coaches. This way, the evaluation on teams' performances will not be based on old assumed rules and statistics that are almost unreachable nowadays.
